Merchant Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre, McLaren Vale

Food and celebration are central to our family and the Italian way of life. Giovanni was never happier than sharing a meal and stories with friends, family and collaborators.

REGION

McLaren Vale enjoys a reputation for producing high quality Shiraz and Grenache along with some alternative varietals from Italy and Spain. Elevation peaks at 350 metres along the Sellicks foothills with these vineyards influenced by the cooler gully winds making them ideal for white wine and cooler climate varieties. Majority of vineyards are located on gently undulating land with strong coastal influences. The Mediterranean climate is characterised by moderate winters, warm summers and predictable winter rainfall.

VINTAGE

Spring started cool keeping vines dormant and delaying bud burst. Temperatures warmed with above average rainfall providing healthy canopies on the vines to begin summer. Very hot conditions in January and February slightly reduced crop levels in some varieties before finishing with a dry, sunny growing season. Despite a small reduction in volume, the fruit was very good quality with ripe flavours and tannin at low sugar levels.

VINIFICATION

Hand harvested fruit from Patritti’s McLaren Vale Grenache (56%) and Shiraz (35%) vineyards was blended with 9% Mourvèdre from the Barossa Valley. Crushed and destemmed with 9% whole bunch fermentation, the individual parcels were all processed and matured separately to allow maximum blending options prior to bottling. Matured in a combination of French oak demi muids, puncheons and stainless steel for 13 - 16 months before blending and bottling.

TASTING COMMENTS

Deep ruby red with a bright ruby hue. The nose is fruit forward with lifted aromas of raspberry, cherry and plum leaping from the glass. The palate is medium bodied, with fine structure and balance. Fruit flavours are in abundance and the juicy mouth feel makes this wine deliciously drinkable.
